Vacuum problems are among the most common — and most overlooked — engine issues. Catching them early can save you from expensive repairs down the road. Here are five signs that your engine may have a vacuum leak.
1. Rough or Unstable Idle
If your RPMs bounce up and down while sitting at a red light, a vacuum leak could be the culprit. Unmetered air entering the engine disrupts the air-fuel mixture, causing an erratic idle.
2. Check Engine Light
A vacuum leak often triggers the P0171 or P0174 codes — System Too Lean. Do not ignore that light. Use a diagnostic tool to read the code before throwing parts at the problem.
3. Hissing Sound From The Engine Bay
Pop the hood and listen carefully. A high-pitched hissing or whistling sound — especially when the engine is cold — is a classic vacuum leak indicator.
4. Poor Fuel Economy
When extra air sneaks in, the engine compensates by adding more fuel. If you are making more trips to the gas station for no obvious reason, check for vacuum leaks.
5. Stalling or Hesitation
The engine stumbles when accelerating from a stop, or stalls altogether. This happens because the air-fuel ratio is thrown off by the unmetered air.

If you recognize any of these signs, a vacuum pressure tester is the fastest way to confirm your suspicion. A few minutes of diagnosis can save you hours of guesswork — and hundreds of dollars in unnecessary parts.
